Swollen vagina can occur in any woman at any age. This condition is caused by several things. Some are not things to worry about and can be treated with mild treatment, but some other causes need to be watched out for and need medical attention.

Swelling of the vagina and vulva can be caused by the following:

1. Too rough and old sexual activity
Besides making discomfort, the vagina that is not well lubricated during sexual intercourse, and foreplay or masturbation that is too long and rough, can also cause the vagina to swell. No need to worry, usually swelling in the vagina will gradually recover within a few days.

2. Pregnancy
Fetal growth during pregnancy can put extra pressure on the pelvis, causing blood and body fluids to gather in the area and not flow properly. This can cause the vagina to become swollen and painful.

3. Irritation
Swollen vagina can be caused due to irritation. This condition is called vaginitis. The reason could be because of the use of panties that are too tight, vaginal cleaning products, vaginal lubricants that contain spermicide, soap that is made from irritants such as perfume, and chemicals contained in toilet tissue or sanitary napkins.

4. Allergy
Swollen vagina accompanied by itching and heat after intercourse can be a sign of an allergy to sperm, or it could be due to an allergy to the latex condoms used.

5. Vaginal infections
A swollen vagina can be a sign of a vaginal infection caused by bacteria, fungi, or viruses. Bacterial vaginosis is a vaginal infection caused by bacteria. In addition to swollen vagina, this infection is also characterized by itching in the vagina and unpleasant smelling vaginal discharge. Meanwhile, fungal infections that attack the vagina are characterized by swollen vagina, pain during urination or sexual intercourse, and thick and lumpy vaginal discharge. The vaginal infection caused by a virus, for example, is genital herpes.

5. Cysts
There are two types of cysts that usually cause symptoms of vaginal swelling, including Gartner cysts and infected Bartholin cysts. When exposed to infection, pus buildup can occur in the cyst causing swelling and pain.

6. Vaginal cancer
Several factors can increase the risk of developing vaginal cancer, namely those above 60 years old, vaginal warts (HPV infection) or abnormalities in the cervix. Vaginal cancer can be asymptomatic, especially in the early stages. However, some symptoms can be lumps or swelling in the vagina, pelvic pain, bleeding and pain after intercourse and when urinating.

If the vagina is swollen caused by pregnancy, irritation or after sex, you can do home care to deal with it. Use a cloth that has been soaked in cold water, and place it on the lips of the vagina to relieve swelling and pain. If necessary, you can take over-the-counter painkillers.

Swollen vagina can be prevented by applying good habits and avoiding the causes. For example:
  • Wear comfortable panties on the skin of the vagina.
  • Meet balanced nutrition.
  • Eating high-biotic foods, such as yogurt.
  • Using a condom during sexual intercourse.
  • Clean the vagina properly (washing the vagina from front to back).
  • Avoid using cleaners or products that can irritate vaginal skin.
Whereas if the vagina is swollen caused by an illness, medical treatment is needed according to the cause. For vaginal swelling caused by infection, the doctor will prescribe antibiotics, antiviral, or antifungal drugs, depending on the cause of the infection. If it is caused by an allergy, the doctor will prescribe an allergy medication. If it is caused by a cyst, surgery may be needed.

For swollen vagina caused by cancer, you need treatment with chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and surgery. Therefore, if there is a complaint of swollen vagina that does not improve, you are advised to consult a doctor for further examination and treatment.
