Artificial Sweeteners for Diabetics

Artificial Sweeteners for Diabetics: The food industry has found a solution for people who are on a diet or with diabetes who love sweet foods. They are known as artificial sweeteners and are used in everything from chewing gum, sweetening coffee, and even baking. There is some controversy regarding its use as some of them are completely synthetic and others are derived from actual sugar plants. But for people with diabetes who don't want to give up their favorite pop or gum, they can be a lifesaver.

The four different types of artificial sweeteners are: saccharin, aspartame, sucralose, acesulfame potassium. Each of these types can be found under various product names and brands. Not all are created the same way and have different uses. Some you can buy in liquid or powder form for baking purposes and others like aspartame are only found in foods that you buy ready-made.

The use of this artificial sweetener will not raise blood sugar and is safe for use by diabetics. Care and attention is still needed because foods that you add sugar to or above are likely to affect your blood sugar. Stick to your diabetic diet but use some artificial sweeteners to make it a little sweeter.

Some diabetics may want to use honey as a sugar substitute. You can of course make this substitution, but honey is very similar to sugar in its carbohydrate content and effect on your blood glucose levels. It is best to enjoy honey in moderation.

Aspartame has been linked in several medical studies to Alzheimer's disease. Talk to your doctor about the benefits and risks of using one of the artificial sweeteners if you have concerns about the potential health risks.
