Diet Exchange

Diet Exchange: Dietary exchange is a eating method that provides diabetes with a set of guidelines needed for healthy eating. Nutritionists will help prepare and educate you about exchange diets - food groups and substitutes for what you can make.

On the exchange diet all food is divided into six food groups:
  • Bread and other starches
  • Fruit
  • Vegetables
  • Milk Food
  • Meat and Meat Replacement
  • Fat

Your nutritionist will give you the number of portions you have to have from each group every day and at mealtime or snack time respectively. In each category there are many food choices. Each food has a specific portion size equal to one serving, in cases such as fruits and vegetables you may not need to measure your food, but for meat and other groups it is recommended a food scale and a measuring cup.

The exchange section of the diet refers to the ability to exchange food in one food group with another in the same group as long as you adhere to the presentation suggestions. For example, ½ cup of cooked pasta can be exchanged with 2 rice cakes in one meal. The list of dieticians you are giving you will be quite complete but there must be items that are not listed. If so, you can contact a nutritionist to ask for advice or keep a list of items that you need to know the size of the presentation.

At first, exchanging food may seem like a lot of work, but over time and you become accustomed to the portion size of your favorite food, it will be less. Proper eating habits are very important for managing diabetes and diet exchange is a way to eat a healthy balanced diet full of variety.
