Protein Affects Blood Sugar Levels

Just like fiber, eating quality protein with snacks and your food can have a positive effect on your blood sugar levels. Combining protein and carbohydrates will slow down the digestion of carbohydrates in your body. This slowdown will prevent your blood sugar from jumping because there are too many carbohydrates in your system.

This does not mean that you have to eat more protein than is recommended in one meal. Doing so can cause other problems on the road. But if you are a diabetic, skipping protein in your diet is not a good idea. For diabetics who are vegetarian or who don't eat a lot of any protein, it's important to find sources that can be consumed regularly.

There are many other high quality protein sources that do not include animal meat. Other protein sources can include:
  • Tofu is a source of protein that can be prepared in various ways including tofu desserts
  • Beans are a very good source of protein but can also be high in fat. Read the nutritional label and enjoy it as needed
  • Seeds such as flax, pumpkin, and sunflowers can be eaten as a source of protein
  • Beans and members of other legumes. There are many ways to prepare peanuts from chili to cold salads
  • Protein powder is available for sprinkling on cereal or made a shake to drink
  • Source of fish - please note that large fish contain high levels of mercury and can only be eaten once or twice a week
When making protein choices, do lean cuts whenever possible. Although protein has a positive influence on blood sugar, excessive fat can cancel its benefits and turn it into a health risk. Enjoy high-fat meat or heavy processed meat on rare occasions and eat a variety of proteins.
