Sports and Diabetes

When you are diabetic, exercise will help control your blood sugar levels. But if you are overweight or obese and diabetes, exercise will also help you lose weight. As diabetics, there are additional considerations and precautions that you need to take before you begin your exercise routine. And once you have started, you always need to be aware of the risks involved.

It is ideal to wait before training if your blood glucose level is too low or high. You can do more damage than good if you don't. Especially dangerous if your blood sugar is low and you start exercising. Physical exertion can cause your blood sugar to drop further which can be an emergency situation. As precautionary measures, if you exercise at the gym, make sure staff know your condition and have emergency instructions and numbers to contact. If you walk or run alone outside, keep an identification that tells you people with diabetes along with phone numbers, snacks and instructions.

For other tips about exercising with diabetes, you can follow the same guidelines that make sense for everyone. Stretch before and after exercise, drink lots of fluids, and don't over-force yourself. It's a smart idea to check your blood sugar before and after exercise and if you feel dizzy when exercising, check it too.

Because foot problems often occur in diabetics, wear the right shoes and socks. If you see a wound in your leg that doesn't go away on its own, see your doctor. If they do not recover they can cause infections and other related complications. Even though there are risks involved in exercising, the benefits are worth it.
